Kappa League Objectives

Kappa League is a program of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. established to meet the objectives of the national service program of known as Guide Right.  These objectives may be summarized as follows:

  1. To inspire service in the public interest through the cultural enrichment and character development of minority males between the ages of 5-25
  2. To develop leadership skills while monitoring, encouraging, and rewarding outstanding academic performance
  3. To refine self-image, self-esteem, social skills, and environmental awareness
  4. To assist parents by providing opportunities for their child to discuss career options with successful professionals
  5. To afford the less fortunate youth with sponsored entertainment and culture enrichment
  6. To inform youth of the value of higher education, assistance available for continued educational pursuits, scholarships, loans, professional counseling, and fellowships

A Brief History

In 1921, two members of the St. Louis Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi (Leon W. Steward and J. Jerome Peters) were assigned to research possible programs that would provide a “meaningful and practical approach” to the problem of underachievement in minorities. Ultimately, Brother Steward, a Y.M.C.A. Secretary, proposed a program of guidance to be designated as Guide Right.

The focus of Guide Right was to provide scholarships to needy and talented students, and to inform young people of the professions and other career options. Kappa League begun as an project of Guide Right in the late 1960’s and became a national program in 1970 after it was adopted the 56th Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Kappa League is a program designed to aid young men of high school age grow and develop their leadership talents. Kappa League provides both challenging and rewarding experiences to enhance their lives. Since the fundamental purpose of Kappa Alpha Psi is ACHIEVEMENT, it is therefore the Fraternity’s mission to help young men achieve worthy goals for themselves, and make constructive contributions to their community when they assume leadership roles.

Kappa League places the training, experience, and friendly interest of successful men at the disposal of youth needing inspiration and counsel regarding big decisions about leadership, scholarship, college, and career. The community is made aware of these student leaders who seek to realize a life of usefulness.
